What's Covered in a Handyman Visit

An overview of the repair and installation categories most commonly requested, along with a few things that usually get referred to a specialty trade instead.

Fixtures & Plumbing Basics

Handyman replacing a bathroom faucet fixture at a sink

What does fixture replacement typically involve?

This category covers faucets, showerheads, toilet components, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and exhaust fans. Most of these swaps involve shutting off water or power to the fixture, removing the old unit, and connecting the new one with attention to fit and sealing.

Fixture work is one of the more common requests because the parts wear out well before the rest of a bathroom or kitchen does. A visit can often include two or three fixtures if they're in the same general area of the house.

Carpentry & Wood Repair

What kind of carpentry falls under "minor"?

Minor carpentry generally means trim and baseboard repair, shelving, small framing fixes around doors or windows, deck board replacement, and cabinet door or drawer adjustments. It stops short of structural framing or load-bearing changes.

These jobs reward patience more than heavy tools. A lot of the visible quality in carpentry work comes down to careful measuring and a clean finish, which is where the time on site usually goes.

Mounting, Drywall & More

What else typically shows up on a repair list?

Mounted televisions, wall shelving, curtain rods, mirrors, and drywall patching round out most of the remaining requests. Cabinet hardware, hinge adjustment, and drawer slide replacement are also common in kitchens that see daily use.

These items are frequently bundled with a fixture swap or carpentry item in the same visit, since they don't usually take long once the technician is already on site with the right tools.

Scope & Limits

What usually falls outside a standard handyman visit?

Being upfront about limits tends to save everyone time. A few categories are typically routed to a specialty licensed trade rather than handled directly.

Electrical Panel Work

Breaker panel changes and new circuit installation generally require a licensed electrician.

Major Re-Piping

Whole-house plumbing replacement is typically referred to a licensed plumbing contractor.

Structural Changes

Load-bearing wall alterations fall outside minor carpentry and usually need an engineer's input.

Gas Line Work

Gas appliance connections and line work are referred to a licensed gas fitter.

Not sure which category a job falls under?

Describing the repair, even briefly, is usually enough to figure out whether it fits a standard visit.
